Greek alchemy is not merely poor in early witnesses; it is stemmatically closed. Every ancient text of the art that exists in Greek reaches us as a descendant of a single Byzantine anthology - the curated collection whose overlapping blocks Marcianus gr. 299, Parisinus gr. 2325 and Parisinus gr. 2327 share, largely in the same internal order. Nothing arrives by a second road: no alchemical treatise travels embedded in a non-alchemical carrier tradition the way lost historians ride inside lexica and excerpt-collections; no independent late-antique alchemical codex ever surfaced; the Theban papyri stand outside the anthology but carry a different, recipe-book stratum (a separate conjecture in this wave), not the corpus's texts. The anthology was therefore ark and filter at once: one Byzantine compiler's taste defined the survivable canon of a thousand-year art, and whatever he excluded died as a class, invisibly. The internal geometry shows the closure is real rather than an artifact of thin cataloguing: the Paris line is not a copy of M - it supplies whole texts that M has lost - so two medieval lines demonstrably diverge and still converge on the same single late-antique salvage. The single-anthology closure is stated outright in the transmission literature: Letrouit's chronologie and the Bude prolegomena state that the whole ancient Greek corpus descends from the Byzantine collection carried by M and the two Paris primaries, that the Paris line is not a copy of M, and they identify item by item the texts the Paris manuscripts preserve that M has lost; the handful of extra-anthology exceptions is likewise discussed there. The <=3 and >=5 clauses are bookkeeping on those published witness registers.
