The Suda's entry on Zosimos (zeta 168, searchable at Suda On Line) attests chemeutika in twenty-eight books arranged kata stoicheion - keyed to the letters - addressed to Theosebeia. Alphabetical arrangement is encyclopedic ambition: it promises completeness and random access, a reference architecture for a whole art. It is also a preservation trap. A letter-keyed corpus has no narrative spine and no reading order; it invites consultation and excerption rather than continuous copying, and an anthology can gut it while seeming to honor it. That is what the record shows: the Greek tradition transmits excerpted memoirs and free-standing pieces (the Authentic Memoirs; the piece transmitted under Omega; the Final Quittance), not the alphabet; the Syriac tradition of Cambridge Mm. 6.29, translated in Berthelot and Duval's La chimie au moyen age II, preserves further letter-keyed books that the Greek line dropped. Sum every language and the majority of the attested alphabet should still be silent - the format that promised completeness is precisely what delivered the corpus to the excerptors, because a book nobody reads through is a book nobody recopies whole. Prediction restated: letter-books attested with actual content across Greek and Syriac together cover at most fifteen of the twenty-eight, and the Greek tradition alone at most five; the loss concentrates exactly where the architecture was most encyclopedic.

The attestation and both witness-blocks are published - Suda zeta 168 gives the 28 books kata stoicheion for Theosebeia, the Greek corpus's non-letter-keyed excerpt-shape (Omega apart) is stated in the Bude introduction's survey of Zosimos' oeuvre, and the Syriac letter-keyed books are printed in translation in Berthelot-Duval - but the cross-language union census the primary clause pins (letter-assigned books with content, <=15 of 28, Greek alone <=5) was not located as tabulated in print; the nearest prior art surveys the structure without running the count.
