The Spanish found the Philippines full of writers: Chirino's 1604 Relación reports that hardly a man, and still less a woman, could not read and write the Tagalog script, and Morga concurs. Yet the surviving pre-1700 corpus of Philippine-script writing is a shelf a child could carry — the 1593 Doctrina Christiana printed with baybayin text (sole copy, Library of Congress), two seventeenth-century land deeds in the University of Santo Tomas archives, baybayin signatures scattered through Spanish notarial files, the script tables of the Boxer Codex. The folk explanation, missionary bonfires, was dismantled by W.H. Scott, who showed the mass-burning testimony to be late and legendary. The conjecture supplies the real mechanism: this was literacy without an archive — writing on bamboo and leaf for letters, poems, debts and deeds, ephemeral by function, with no scriptural canon and no recopying institution to give any text a second generation — so the corpus died of use, not persecution. The clincher is that the script itself never wholly died: Hanunoo and Tagbanwa communities write their scripts to this day, and still possess no old manuscripts, because the function never changed. Survival, where it happened, was immediate archival capture by the new colonial order.
