This conjecture holds that the legal function, not the sanctity, is the primary driver of the well-known overrepresentation of gospel books among the oldest surviving Ethiopian manuscripts: a gospel book whose margins held the community's land titles was defended through war, fire, and reform in a way no psalter or homiliary was, because destroying it extinguished property rights. If this holds, the age structure of the surviving Geʽez corpus is partly a map of property law rather than of devotion, and the reflex 'oldest surviving equals most sacred' breaks.
