The surviving record seems to say Ethiopia wrote early and the Sahel wrote late: Ethiopian parchment books survive from the first millennium, Sahel books barely from before 1600. This conjecture claims much of that famous asymmetry is a substrate artifact: parchment in highland conditions outlasts paper in Sahelian conditions by roughly an order of magnitude in half-life, so EQUAL medieval production in the two corridors would still yield the observed skew in surviving objects. Differential real loss (type-1), applied to two different materials, has been misread as differential history, and the apparent 700-year Ethiopian head start in surviving books compresses sharply once the substrate correction is applied. If it holds, comparative dating of African literatures from surviving-object curves is invalid without an explicit substrate term — and that term becomes estimable from the two corpora's own dated-object distributions.
