Letter-writers do not invent their openings; they reproduce the current epistolary fashion, and in the medieval Islamicate world that fashion was set by chancery practice, which changed with dynasties and administrations. Jewish letter-writers in Fustat absorbed those conventions through constant contact with state paperwork. The conjecture is that the opening and blessing formulas of Geniza letters track official chancery regimes with a short, consistent lag — a decade or two — so tightly that a formula-based classifier can date an undated letter to within about a quarter-century with no palaeography, and transitions between formula regimes cluster around the Fatimid-Ayyubid and Ayyubid-Mamluk breaks rather than drifting smoothly. Fashion in politeness was punctuated, and punctuated from above. If this holds, thousands of undated letters inherit dates, and the Geniza's chronology thickens at no archaeological cost.
