It entered posterity as literature — collected, copied, eventually printed in volumes where the parties become the placeholder names Reuven and Shimon and the town becomes 'a certain place.' The Geniza uniquely preserves the documentary stage: actual sent responsa and question-drafts with names and addresses intact. The conjecture is that comparing these documentary survivors with their literary descendants reveals a systematic, directional editing regime — anonymization, deletion of sums and dates, smoothing of local detail — strong enough to quantify, and strong enough to warn that the responsa literature, a mainstay of medieval Jewish social history, is a lossy, curated compression of its documentary substrate. If this holds, the practice of reading printed responsa as direct social evidence breaks, and the loss function itself becomes a finding.
