Some Dunhuang scrolls carry a sequence of narrative pictures on one side and text on the other, keyed panel to panel — apparatus for picture-recitation, where the performer displays the images while delivering the story. The surprising connection is that such an object is a metronome: each panel's allotted text is a unit of audience-holding time, so per-panel text lengths should be strikingly uniform, unlike the freely varying section lengths of texts divided by content logic.
