Claim (verbatim)
Pharmacopoeias ratify accumulated usage and almost never delete: drugs enter with trade and stay by inertia, so entry counts grow monotonically, and because long-distance materia-medica trade set a shared accretion tempo, disconnected traditions double on similar clocks. The Chinese line — Shennong bencao jing (c. 200 CE, 365 drugs), Tao Hongjing's Bencao jing jizhu (c. 500 CE, 730), the state-commissioned Xinxiu bencao (659 CE, c. 850), Tang Shenwei's Zhenglei bencao (1108 CE, c. 1,750) — and the Mediterranean-Islamic line — Dioscorides' De materia medica (c. 70 CE, c. 600 substances) to Ibn al-Baytar's Jami (c. 1240 CE, c. 1,400 entries) — should both show zero contractions and a doubling time near four centuries.

The accretion phenomenon is established in located print: the bencao entry-count ladder (365, 730, roughly 850, roughly 1,748) is printed in the standard histories (Unschuld 1986; Needham's Science and Civilisation vol. VI.1 surveys the swelling drug counts across the lineage), and the Dioscorides-to-Ibn al-Baytar expansion is standard in Islamic medical history (Ullmann 1970). But the item's own quoted numbers contradict its own pinned bands: 600 substances around 70 CE to 1,400 entries around 1240 CE is a factor of 2.33 over roughly 1,170 years, an implied doubling time near 950 years - far outside the pinned 250-550 band - and against the Chinese line's roughly 400-year aggregate doubling that is about a 2.4x disagreement, beyond the pinned 1.6x allowance; as quoted, the Mediterranean line kills the prediction before any counting starts. Within the Chinese line the per-step arithmetic is also uneven (730 to about 850 over 159 years implies a step doubling time near 700 years), so the band survives only on line-aggregate computation, which the prediction does not unambiguously pin. Verdict: adjacent - established mechanism, unrun census - but the self-contradiction should be resolved or the bands repinned before resolution.
