The correction that reveals a letter was heard
The September 2026 noetic wave. These conjectures were imagined without searches or source retrieval. At publication, they had not been tested or checked against prior scholarship. Draft QUINCUNX plans are proposed sketches, not registered protocols or runnable studies; having a plan is not a ranking of feasibility.
Generation, selection and limitations
GPT-6 Astra at maximum reasoning was requested for generation; the runtime model and reasoning setting were not independently verified. Of 202 drafts, two close overlaps were withdrawn and replaced, leaving 200. Their original numbers are retained, including the gaps at 123 and 131.
Several entries apply related ideas about responsibility, memory or coordination to different cultures. Geographic breadth does not make them independent explanations. Some proposed evidence may never have survived, rather than merely awaiting access. Each design still needs a bounded population, measurable alternatives and complete outcome rules before registration.
Status is derived only from the shepherd-authored triage/prediction data above -- community submissions and claims are a separate overlay and can never change it (see the participation panel below).
Claim (verbatim)
Some corrections in Judaeo-Arabic letters may reveal that a draft was recovered through listening rather than copied from a visible exemplar. Judaeo-Arabic is Arabic written in Hebrew letters. A writer hearing a dictated correction could replace a plausible sound sequence while leaving a visually similar error untouched. The conjecture concerns particular production episodes, not an entire community's literacy. The rival is silent recopying with ordinary visual confusion. Corrected personal names are especially useful because the intended form may be recoverable from independent correspondence. Prediction: Within independently linked correspondence groups, first-stage errors followed by correction should disproportionately preserve pronunciation rather than letter shape, compared with securely copied controls. If corrected errors are better predicted by visual similarity and line position, the listening-based reconstruction fails. Ambiguous names must be excluded under a prior coding rule. Test with: The Cambridge University Library Taylor-Schechter Genizah Collection could supply Judaeo-Arabic letter drafts, corrections, repeated correspondents, and parallel names. These are discarded manuscript fragments from the Cairo Genizah. Image access, production-stage ordering, and independent evidence for intended names require verification.

Nobody has run this test. The kill-data is named above. If you can run it — or you know the paper that already settles it — claim the kill or submit the prior scholarship. Kills and prior scholarship are credited here, by name, as they come in.
How this item is catalogued
Catalogue tags are curatorial metadata that make the conjecture findable. They are not findings, not a novelty verdict, and naming a source family is not a promise that the data exist or are accessible. Each dimension below says whether it was assigned, reviewed with none applying, uncertain, or not yet reviewed, and who recorded it.
- Place & era tags — Assigned
- Egypt; Islamic world; Medieval Tagged by gpt-6-astra
- Dating — Phenomenon
- Dated c. 1000 CE – 1300 CE Proposed medieval Judaeo-Arabic correspondence-production horizon, narrowed by dated letter groups. Tagged by gpt-6-astra
- Subject — Assigned
- Everyday & documentary writing; The oral-written interface The correction that reveals a letter was heard Tagged by gpt-6-astra
- Finer subject topic — Assigned
- Everyday letters and epistolary practice The claim is squarely about ordinary correspondence and how it was drafted. Tagged by claude-opus-5 draft (requested max effort) adjudicated by claude-fable-5-1 driver, lane 1da5; runtime not independently attested
- Claim level — Assigned
- Record claim The claim is about a production episode, whether a draft was recovered by listening or copied from a visible exemplar, and the prediction is about the error-and-correction profile in the letters (source label 'world'). Tagged by claude-opus-5 draft (requested max effort) adjudicated by claude-fable-5-1 driver, lane 1da5; runtime not independently attested
- Method — Assigned
- Channel dissociation First-stage errors are attributed to ear or eye by whether the correction preserves pronunciation or letter shape against securely copied controls, which is the lens's two-channel error-spectrum test. Tagged by claude-opus-5 draft (requested max effort) adjudicated by claude-fable-5-1 driver, lane 1da5; runtime not independently attested
- Evidence source — Assigned
- Cairo Geniza The Cambridge University Library Taylor-Schechter Genizah Collection is named and is exactly the Geniza family; the text says image access, production-stage ordering and independent evidence for intended names require verification. Tagged by claude-opus-5 draft (requested max effort) adjudicated by claude-fable-5-1 driver, lane 1da5; runtime not independently attested
- Research stage — Test design proposed (unregistered)
- A written test design (unit, target, rival, discriminator, outcome rules, feasibility gap) exists in the retained design file; it is not registered, not feasibility-checked and not an engine input. Tagged by claude-fable-5-1 (driver, lane 1da5; mechanical derivation from the design file)

Provenance
Run: Fresh agent generation · model: gpt-6-astra
posed by GPT-6 Astra (Codex)
Noetic imagination in four fresh author contexts and a fresh two-item supplement, requested GPT-6 Astra at max reasoning. 202 generated; two overlaps withdrawn; 200 retained. No retrieval or empirical results supplied to authors. Runtime model/effort were not independently attested. Catalogue tags are authored metadata, not findings. Untested; prior scholarship has not been checked. QUINCUNX plans are design proposals only.
