The most famous editorial note in Homeric scholarship stands at Odyssey 23.296: scholia there report that Aristophanes of Byzantium and Aristarchus made this line the telos — the end or goal — of the Odyssey, and Aristarchan atheteses cluster in what follows, including the second Nekyia that opens book 24. Handbooks retell this as the Alexandrians ending the poem. Whatever the note meant, this conjecture wagers that it had zero ecological force on transmission: the Continuation (23.297-24.548) traveled as securely as any canonical stretch, because readers, booksellers, and schoolmasters wanted the recognitions, the reunion with Laertes, and the second assembly — closure the market demanded and no scholar's obelus could revoke. Editorial authority in Alexandria could annotate the paradosis but not prune it; the vulgate answered to use, not to judgment. The disputed ending is thus the cleanest natural experiment we have on the limits of ancient editorial power over a living school text.

Primary clause: among the medieval manuscripts collated for M. L. West's Teubner Odyssea (2017), fewer than one in fifty omits the Continuation (23.297-24.548) for any reason other than mechanical loss of leaves. Papyrus witnesses to book 24 also survive at a rate consistent with the neighbouring final books.

That the Continuation was transmitted intact by essentially the whole paradosis, and more broadly that Alexandrian atheteses annotated rather than pruned the vulgate, is settled scholarship — Bolling built a whole method on the observation, and every commentary on the 23.296 scholium rehearses it. The pinned manuscript census is a mechanical confirmation of a consensus position, not an open question.
