Claim (verbatim)
Dindorf's 1855 Oxford edition of the Odyssey scholia, and Ludwich's tabulations after it, transmit strikingly few Aristarchan atheteses for the Odyssey compared with the Iliad's rich record, and handbooks read this as a lighter editorial hand — the Odyssey as the poem Aristarchus mostly let be. This conjecture wagers that the lightness is an artifact of channel loss, not of editorial behavior. Aristonicus wrote on the critical signs of the Odyssey as he did for the Iliad; Didymus reported Aristarchan readings for both; the difference is that the Odyssey's excerpt-chain collapsed — no apparatus-codex, thinner carriers — squeezing the critical record through narrower and lossier pipes. If so, the record should still be leaking upward: wherever neglected witnesses are newly collated, fresh Aristarchan material should surface. Filippomaria Pontani's ongoing edition, built on a fuller manuscript census than Dindorf ever used, is exactly such a recollation, and the wager is that it recovers editorial activity Dindorf never printed.

That Dindorf's 1855 edition rests on a narrow manuscript base and that Pontani's recollation recovers material is established in principle — it is the raison d'être of the new edition. The pinned tabulation (≥3 Aristarchan notices in Pontani's published volumes with no Dindorf counterpart) is a concrete side-by-side collation I have not seen run. Caution: Pontani's published volumes cover the early books only; the clause is compatible with that coverage but registration should name the exact volumes in scope.
