Claim (verbatim)
The oldest layer of the corpus announces its own architecture. Synesius' commentary, framed as instruction to Dioscorus, priest of Serapis at Alexandria, attests that 'Democritus' - Bolus of Mendes writing under the atomist's flag - composed four books on the four branches of the sacred art: the making of gold, the making of silver, the treatment of precious stones, and purple. Against that attested plan, the extant Democritean corpus in CAAG consists of the Physika kai mystika, a text mutilated at its head that carries the purple and gold material, and the excerpts on the making of silver; the book on stones survives as no continuous text anywhere in the tradition. The mechanism is selection by doctrinal usefulness: the commentators who kept the tradition alive lectured on transmutation, so the metallic books had an exegete constituency and a classroom career, while the lapidary craft matter - workshop knowledge with no theological future - had neither, and the four-book encyclopedia of crafts narrowed to the parts the classroom wanted. Modern scholarship (Martelli's edition of the Four Books of Pseudo-Democritus) reconstructs the same arithmetic from the same witnesses. Prediction restated: of the four attested subject-books, at most two survive as continuous texts in CAAG, with the stones book at zero continuous text, while the four-fold attestation itself stands secure in Synesius as transmitted.

Martelli's edition states the entire arithmetic the primary clause pins: Synesius' commentary attests the four-book plan (gold, silver, stones, purple); the extant Democritean remains are the Physika kai mystika (mutilated at the head, carrying the purple and gold material) and the excerpts on silver; the books on stones and purple survive as no continuous text - two of four, stones at zero, exactly as the conjecture predicts, stated in the standard edition of the very witnesses named as the kill dataset.
