The corpus transmits its own honor-roll: a list of the philosophers of the divine science and art, printed among the preliminary pieces of CAAG, naming the canon the tradition believed it descended from - Hermes and Agathodaimon at the mythic head, then the human college: Demokritos, Maria, Cleopatra, Ostanes, Pebichius, Pauseris, Chymes the art's eponymous founder, and the rest. The roll is a shelf-list for a library we do not have. Matched against the corpus itself, most of the names on it should own not a single transmitted treatise; they persist as quotation-fossils inside Zosimos and the commentators - the sociology of the workshop (who taught, who mattered, whose procedures were cited at the bench) outliving the texts themselves. Maria the Jewess is the exhibit: the tradition's practitioner-engineer, whose apparatus Zosimos quotes constantly and whose water-bath still carries her name in the kitchens of Europe (bain-marie, bagnomaria), owns zero standalone work in the Greek manuscript tradition. The mechanism: craft authority was personal and oral, entering writing chiefly as citation inside literary authors; when the independent booklets died, the citations kept the names alive as pure reputation - a canon of masters detached from their books.
