The corpus's teaching frame is epistolary and dialogic: Zosimos writes to Theosebeia - the Suda attests the whole twenty-eight-book work was addressed to her, and the Final Quittance addresses her directly; Synesius' commentary is addressed to Dioscorus; Isis instructs her son Horus; Komarios teaches Cleopatra; pieces in the Stephanus tradition carry named dedicatees. The genre implies a second voice. Instruction in a craft is a loop - the pupil's questions, trials and failures, the master's corrections - and the corpus's own frame presupposes that return traffic: Zosimos argues against Theosebeia's other advisers, answers her objections, reacts to what she has evidently tried. Transmission kept exactly one direction. There is no letter of Theosebeia, no reply of Dioscorus, no report back from Horus; even Cleopatra, unique in crossing to the teaching side (the Dialogue of the philosophers and Cleopatra; the Chrysopoeia diagram-sheet under her name), has nothing transmitted in the pupil direction of her own instruction by Komarios. The mechanism: copying selects broadcast over exchange - the master-voice text is finished, authoritative and reusable, while the answering half is occasional and personal; and the practical half of pedagogy, what the learner actually did at the bench and what failed, lived in the lost direction. Prediction restated: at least six corpus works are framed master-to-named-addressee, and transmitted texts in the reply direction number zero.

The master-to-addressee frames are documented in the editions (Zosimos to Theosebeia, Synesius to Dioscorus, Isis to Horus, Komarios to Cleopatra), and the loss of the pupil's side - Theosebeia known only through Zosimos' address, no letter of hers transmitted - is remarked in the Bude introduction; but a direction-census of the corpus under a strict named-addressee rule, with the >=6 addressed works and zero-reply clauses, was not located as ever having been computed.
