Read as a pair, the two Theban papyri preserve one artisan library shelved by trade, and the shelving itself is the finding. The Stockholm papyrus is overwhelmingly a book of seeming: recipes for imitation emeralds and other stones, artificial pearls, and purple substitutes - dyeing wool so that it passes for murex - the counter-side knowledge of a jeweller and dyer serving a luxury market from below. Leiden X holds the metallurgical end: alloys that pass for gold and silver, metal-writing inks, surface treatments. On this physical evidence, alchemy's founding stratum is the workshop economy of acceptable substitutes for elite materials; transmutation doctrine arrived later and re-narrated the craft upward, from counterfeit to cosmos. The papyri let us count the craft base directly, recipe by recipe, before the doctrine got hold of it: category shares within and between the two books should show the trade split - stones, pearls and purple massed in Stockholm, metals massed in Leiden. Prediction restated: at least 70 percent of Stockholm recipes concern stones, pearls or purple, and the metallic share in Leiden X runs at least three times the metallic share in Stockholm. If instead the two books mix categories evenly, the trade-specialization reading dies and with it the counterfeit-first account of the art's base stratum.

The category composition of the two papyri is published with counts: Lagercrantz's edition, Caley's annotated English translations and Halleux's Bude introduction all tabulate the recipe classes - Stockholm overwhelmingly stones, pearls and purple with only a handful of metallurgical items, Leiden X dominated by metal-working - so the 0.70 imitation-craft share and the 3x metallic asymmetry are guaranteed by tabulations already in print rather than by an un-run classification.
