Claim (verbatim)

The technical Democritus - the corpus Bolus of Mendes and his continuators issued under the atomist's name - was mainstream Roman-era reading, and Rome left us the citation instrument to prove it. Book 1 of Pliny's Natural History transmits per-book source-indices, the ex-auctoribus lists, and Democritus should stand in the indices of a substantial run of books, concentrated exactly where the technical corpus lived: plants, drugs, metals, stones, the workings of nature turned to use. Pliny names the Cheirokmeta - the 'hand-wrought things' - as Democritus' in so many words (NH 24.160); Columella cites a Georgika under the name; Petronius jokes about the experimenter squeezing the juice of every herb and stone. Of all this, continuous text survives nowhere: what remains under the name is the alchemical excerpt-stratum and quotation fragments. The index auctorum therefore measures, book by book, a shelf of applied natural knowledge that the first century had at hand and we do not - and measures it in a source that is itself fully open and countable, compiled by the one Roman who listed his reading. Prediction restated: Democritus appears in the source-indices of at least eight books of the Natural History, while zero works of the technical corpus - Cheirokmeta, the Georgika, On sympathies and antipathies - survive as continuously transmitted texts.

Both clauses are already in print: Pliny's book-1 indices are themselves the published tabulation, and the Quellenkritik literature has long registered Democritus' presence across them, book by book, in its source-tables (Muenzer; Wellmann on the Georgika and the Bolan technical corpus), while the zero continuous survival of the Cheirokmeta, the Georgika and the Sympathies is the stated status of the technical Democritea, which exist only as fragments and the alchemical excerpt-stratum.
