Wine-dark entropy. Ancient shipwrecks preserve frozen samples of trade: each cargo is a snapshot of what was moving, and from where, at the moment of sinking. The Shannon entropy of cargo composition — how mixed a ship's load is across goods and origins — is a direct gauge of market integration, since integrated economies fill hulls from many sources while contracting ones ship homogeneous local cargoes. The conjecture is that economic disintegration precedes political disintegration measurably: in the Parker and Strauss wreck databases, cargo entropy should fall roughly a generation before episodes of political fragmentation, the markets thinning out while the states still look intact. Falling cargo diversity would thus be a leading indicator of collapse — markets disintegrate first, and the wrecks record it.
Prediction clause (verbatim)
For each wreck in the Parker/Strauss wreck databases with datable, provenance-classified cargo, compute the Shannon entropy of cargo composition (types and origins) and aggregate into 25-year bins; mark independently dated episodes of political fragmentation. Primary clause: mean cargo entropy declines significantly (one-sided test, p < 0.05) in the 25–50 year window preceding fragmentation episodes relative to the prior century's level, and cross-correlation shows the entropy decline leading, not lagging, the political break.
