The Ptolemaic papyri of the Iliad are notorious for their eccentricity: plus-verses, concordance lines, rearrangements — the wild Homer that predates the settled vulgate. Handbooks extend that wildness to the Homeric text wholesale, treating the two epics as one textual ecology. This wager splits them. The Odyssey's early circulation was thinner: fewer copies, fewer rhapsodic show-pieces in competitive excerpt performance, a smaller school footprint — and every one of those channels is a variant factory. Fewer performances reworking purple passages should mean fewer floating expansion verses seeking re-entry into written copies. The claim: the third- and second-century BCE Odyssey papyri, collected in Stephanie West's The Ptolemaic Papyri of Homer (1967) and augmented by later finds, are measurably tamer than their Iliadic contemporaries, showing a lower rate of plus-verses per preserved line. Wildness was not a property of Homer but of intensity of use; the epic that was performed hardest and taught hardest varied hardest, and the second epic rode in calmer water.

The eccentricity of Ptolemaic Homer papyri — plus-verses, concordance lines — is established, and S. West's 1967 corpus covers both epics. What the pin adds is the differential: a per-100-lines plus-verse rate computed separately for Odyssey and Iliad papyri and compared. I know of no published quantitative comparison of wildness by epic. Caution for registration: the Ptolemaic Odyssey sample is small, so the rate is noisy — the denominator handling and the treatment of fragments with no complete lines must be pre-pinned.
