Claim (verbatim)

Before the books had letters they had names. Aelian (Varia Historia 13.14) reports that the ancients performed Homer in named episodes: for the Odyssey, pieces like the events in Pylos, Calypso's cave, the raft, Alcinous' apologoi, the Cyclopeia, the Nekyia, the Niptra, the slaying of the suitors, the scenes at Laertes' farm. These titles are not aliases of the letter-books: they cut the poem into units of telling — an evening's matter — and they nest and overlap, with the Cyclopeia and the Nekyia sitting inside the span of the Apologoi, as performance repertoire does and as library units cannot. The claim: the episode-title layer is the older segmentation of the Odyssey, generated by recitation practice, and the 24-letter grid was laid over it without ever fully displacing it — the names kept circulating in scholia, manuscript rubrics, and quotation habits long after the letters won the spine of the book.
